Revenue Associate (Contract)

Position Summary

An Arm and a Leg is hiring a Revenue Associate to help build and run its donor stewardship and fundraising program.

The show has a fundraising list of donors with capacity who need stewarding. That is where you come in. You keep donors connected to the work through the year with notes, calls, updates and thank-yous, and you keep good records of those conversations. When first-time donors appear, you use wealth-screening tools to identify candidates for development and stewardship. When a donor looks ready for a larger conversation, you bring in the host or the operations manager and help them prepare. You are not making the big asks. You are setting them up.

The other side of the role is social media. An Arm and a Leg has a deep library of reporting and free toolkits —but little social presence pointing people toward these resources. You help build that presence over time. People find the work, use the toolkits and support the show, some of them without ever listening to an episode.

Reports to: Revenue consultant, who hires, trains and supervises this role.

Employment type: 1099 Part-time, hourly with the opportunity to become a staff member in 2027

Location: Remote

Pay: $30 per hour, approximately 20-25 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

Donor Stewardship (primary)

  • Keep a warm, steady rhythm of contact to individual donors with additional capacity.
  • Keep notes and history current in the donor CRM so the team knows where each relationship stands.
  • Major donor cultivation and membership program development, including donor phone calls and timely, personal thank-yous and acknowledgments.
  • Share updates with donors between campaigns.
  • Notice when a donor is ready for a larger conversation. Bring the host or the operations manager in, help them prepare and get the meeting scheduled.
  • Watch for newer donors who may be able to do more, and start building those relationships early.
  • Handle smaller asks directly by email on virtual meetings.

Fundraising Campaigns

  • Write and send fundraising emails, including the year-end appeal and mid-year campaigns.
  • Test subject lines and approaches, and carry what works into the next campaign.
  • Segment the list by giving level, recency and lapse status before sends.
  • Help build a case for support documents and impact snapshots the team shares with donors.
  • Coordinate with the operations manager on reconciling donation records with the fiscal sponsor.

Social Media and Social Advertising

  • Build the show’s social presence on Bluesky, Threads, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.
  • Point posts toward the free toolkits and reporting on the website, which draw people who have never heard an episode.
  • Develop and maintain a monthly content calendar drawn from the existing archive, with posts around new episodes, news moments and campaign windows.
  • Support awareness during NewsMatch and other giving moments.

Who You Are

  • You have stewarded donors before and enjoy the relationship side of fundraising.
  • You have written fundraising or marketing emails, ideally for a nonprofit or media organization.
  • You are detail-oriented and comfortable keeping good records in a donor database. Little Green Light experience is a plus.
  • You can turn a complicated pitch into a few short, persuasive sentences.
  • You have worked with social media and have experience with paid campaigns.
  • You are patient with work that builds gradually. Donor relationships and social presence both take time.
  • Interest in health care policy or nonprofit journalism is a plus. Not a requirement.

Compensation and Schedule

$30 per hour, approximately 20-25 hours per week. Invoiced bi-weekly.

Equal Opportunity

An Arm and a Leg is an equal opportunity employer. It welcomes applicants of every background and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability or veteran status.

About An Arm and a Leg

An Arm and a Leg is a podcast about why health care costs so much and what we can maybe do about it, produced by a team of award-winning journalists. Our First Aid Kit newsletter compiles essential takeaways from our reporting.

Dan Weissmann created the show in 2018. The podcast is produced in partnership with KFF Health News and distributed by KUOW.

Episodes have been downloaded more than 3.75 million times. The show has drawn coverage from The New York Times, NPR and other national outlets, and has picked up multiple national journalism awards. Congressional staff and state commissions use the reporting. Law schools, social work programs and medical schools assign it as coursework. A nonprofit that has canceled $170 million in medical debt credits the show with fueling its growth. And listeners email the team every week to say An Arm and a Leg’s work helped them fight a medical bill, get an insurance company to cover care or simply feel less alone.

Listener donations are the organization's biggest source of funding.

The team is small and works remotely from Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C.  Anchored by a full-time host/reporter/executive producer and a three-fourths time senior producer, it includes fractional teammates in editing, audio engineering and operations roles.  This new role adds dedicated fundraising and revenue capacity to that team.
