COVID testing is supposed to be free in the U.S. Great! So why do some people find themselves stuck with hundreds or even thousands of dollars in unexpected bills?

Earlier in the pandemic, Sarah Kliff from the New York Times looked into a ton of these bills, and sadly, much of what she learned then is still relevant more than a year later.

Her advice? Avoid the ER, do some research ahead of time, and ask if they’re going to do any other tests (which may not be covered 100%).

We’re republishing our episode with Sarah with a couple small 2022 updates.

Want to learn more about avoiding a big bill for your COVID test? First Aid Kit has you covered.

Sarah has updated coverage too, for the Times.
